What Is Quartz?

Quartz countertops are engineered material created through a manufacturing process that mixes approximately 95 percent ground natural quartz with 5 percent polymer resins. The result is a super-hard, low-maintenance, natural stone-look countertop available in a dazzling array of colors. Quartz countertops have developed a reputation as a high-end surface material for kitchens and baths. Made from one of the hardest minerals on earth, quartz countertops are extremely durable and versatile.

What is stone?

Stone countertops are actual quarried stone….available in granite, marble and other natural stone. They have an organic beauty and they’re very durable because (if you’ll pardon the pun) they’re hard as a rock. But the advantages don’t stop there: Stone is heat resistant, easy to maintain (if properly sealed) and available in a wide range of colors and textures. Our suppliers source stone from quarries on 6 continents for incredible variety in look and function.

What are laminate countertops?

Laminate countertops are made by combining layers of paper and resins into a single, semi-rigid plastic sheet. Brown Kraft paper is used for the bottom layers. A decorative sheet that bears the visible color and/or design of the laminate countertop goes in the middle and translucent sheets of paper form the top layer. Multiple sheets of paper are used in each layer and the total number of sheets varies and overall thickness depends on what type or grade of laminate is being manufactured.

All paper layers are soaked in a resin, which serves as a glue and binder. The layers are then pressed or “laminated” together while cooked, which forces all the papers and resins to chemically bond into one plasticized sheet. These sheets can then be cut to size and glued to a plywood substrate to create a custom laminate countertops.

Laminate countertops are durable and affordable and come in hundreds of styles and designs.

Natural characteristics and expectations of your new countertops

Sealer: Quartz and laminate countertops do not need to be sealed to be stain resistant. Natural stone has a sealer applied before installation and we recommend re-applying every few years, depending on use, to continue your protection. For daily cleaning of Quartz and natural stone, we recommend Pristine clean, available at our store.

Natural characteristics: While Quartz is manufactured, it is still made from natural stones. Therefore, just like Natural stone, Marble, and Granite, you can expect that the surface may not be perfectly uniform. These finishes are subject to variations in color, shade, and grain structure. A range of inconsistencies may be present in each top including channels, dips, ridges, depressions, and indentations. These variations add character and are not considered flaws. No two slabs are exactly alike and the characteristics can vary greatly, making each installation unique. We recommend visual inspection of your slab prior to fabrication to eliminate any surprises.
