Inside the New Consumers Energy Innovation Center

The transformation of the former Woolworth's building in Downtown Jackson into the new Consumers Energy Innovation Center is complete. Christoff and Sons Floor Covering is one of the many Jackson companies involved in the design, construction and furnishing of this multi-million dollar project. In these photos we see many of the unique features of the new center including exposed brick, glass tile, custom interface carpet tiles and motorized window treatments. Christoff and Sons products and design work make for a very high-tech and modern look while preserving original architecture and detail.

The four-story Innovation Center includes members of Consumers Energy's strategic innovation, energy efficiency and customer service teams, who are focused on developing new and creative energy solutions. CP Federal Credit Union, the Heat and Warmth Fund and the Anchor Initiative are also in the building. CP Federal Credit Union has moved into the center and is operating a branch storefront office.

The building includes one floor of collaborative space available to all of the buildings tenants. It includes room for large meetings and for smaller groups from different teams or employers to work together to develop ideas.

Working with General Contractor R.W. Mercer and Sons, Christoff and Sons provided flooring and window treatments appropriate for the adaptive re-use project. Challenges included providing daylight and natural light in an older building.

Among the highlights: A new atrium skylight that cuts through the roof and three levels of concrete floors, repair and restoration of the terra cotta cladding on the building exterior, open air and exposed ceilings and brick.

The Innovation Center is among several new projects bringing excitement and energy to the city's core.
